BIG NEWS! I’m teaming up with animal portrait artist Anna Hileman to bring you two awesome back to back portrait workshops at my studio in Chattanooga, TN! Anna and I will be co-teaching these so you will get both of us at once which means lots of individual instruction!

Here’s the breakdown:

  • People Portraits- December 12-13th $625
  • Pet Portraits-December 14th $325

  • Registration will open September 18th. Class size is limited and this event will sell out so reserve your spot early!

Class Descriptions:

People Portrait Class Description:

Learn to paint impressionistic representational portraits.  Ali will demonstrate techniques including image transfer, underpainting, glazing, and loose brushwork. In this two day workshop students will create two works of art.   The first day the class will recreate a step by step sample portrait designed by Ali.  One the second day each student will paint from their own personal photo using the same process.      

• Products used 

 Golden fluid acrylics and glaze, TFR canvas

• Students should bring: 

Clear high quality reference image for their personal portrait created on day 2.  Good reference images are face close ups with a strong light and dark contrast. 

Reference image must be emailed to Ali and approved at least 1 week prior to class.  ali@positivespaceart.com 

What makes a good reference image?

  • Close up of the head and shoulders
  • Clear high resolution image
  • Strong light and dark contrast
  • A closed mouth is easier to paint than one that shows teeth
  • iPad or tablet – optional – Many students have found it helpful to view their reference images on their tablets.  
  • There will also be printed handouts with the images for those who do not bring a tablet.   
  • Apron 

All painting supplies are included.  Students will receive a personal brush set and two new palettes to take home.

Pet Portrait Class Description:

Capture your favorite animal on canvas in this Pet Portrait workshop with artist Anna Hileman! Whether your pet is spunky, playful, or cuddly, Anna will guide you in capturing their unique personality and characteristics in a painting. Students will learn brush techniques, color mixing and steps required to painting a beloved pet portrait. Anna will correspond with each student prior to the workshop to assist with photographing a pet and what to look for when selecting the best photograph to paint from. Finally, all students will take home a one of a kind portrait of a pet! Please leave your pets at home for this workshop. All materials provided and your image will be printed for your convenience upon arrival.

Travel, Food, and Accommodations:

Food 

Breakfast including coffee, pastries and fresh fruit will be provided through our in-house catering company Dish T Pass.  

Freshly made boxed lunches will be available for purchase from Dish T Pass (located inside the studio building) for $10. Lunch options include freshly made salads, sandwiches, and soups.   We will take a 45 minute lunch break each day.   

*Lunch must be ordered by 8:30 am each morning of class.  

Parking 

You are welcome to park in our lot but you will need to be sure to sign into our guest book located in the lobby.

Positive Space studio is located inside Chattanooga WorkSpace.   302 W. 6th Street. Chattanooga TN, 37402.    

Airports 

Chattanooga Airport is probably the most convenient however there are not many direct flights and you may have to stop in Atlanta or Charlotte. Chattanooga Airport is about a 15-20 minute drive from the studio.  

Atlanta , Knoxville, and Nashville are all about 2hrs away.   There is a shuttle through Groome Transportation that will bring you to Chattanooga from Nashville or Atlanta airports.   Round trip fare is $84.  This will bring you to the shuttle station located just outside of downtown.   You will need to catch a cab to get to your hotel.

Positive Space is located downtown and there are many hotels within walking distance.   There are also several budget hotels located near Hamilton Place mall that are about a 20 minute drive.    

Chattanooga also has many AirB&B options close to the downtown area.
